Changing the approach to the prosthetic system: The government plans to launch grants for bionic prosthetics
27/07/2025
The government has announced changes to the approach of the prosthetic system and the creation of new opportunities for the development of Ukraine's market for modern bionic prosthetics.
"Prosthetics is one of the top priorities in social policy today. We must ensure that everyone in need — both military personnel and civilians — receives a high-quality prosthetic in a timely manner. We want this market to grow, with more Ukrainian manufacturers emerging," emphasized Ukrainian Prime Minister Yulia Svyrydenko.
She added that the government plans to launch grants for bionic prosthetics.
"The procedure for obtaining prosthetics for military personnel and affected civilians should be simple, transparent, and as fast as possible. That is why the Ministry of Social Policy is preparing a comprehensive vision to reboot the system. This area is one of my top priorities as a minister, and it will receive significant attention. A prosthetic is not just a technical device but a means to restore a person to a full, dignified life after injury," stated Denis Ulyutin, Ukraine's Minister of Social Policy, Family, and Unity.
During a visit to the production facility of Esper Bionics, which has successfully scaled to an international level and now has offices in New York and Berlin, the head of the government and the Minister of Social Policy, Family, and Unity familiarized themselves with innovative Ukrainian technologies.
Esper Bionics' flagship product, the bionic hand Esper Hand, was included in TIME's list of best inventions. The new generation of prosthetics, currently in development, will be technologically advanced and more affordable in price. This will align with the maximum cost set by the state for free provision of prosthetics to people with disabilities and military personnel who underwent amputations due to combat.
This week also included meetings with rehabilitation specialists, manufacturers, and heads of rehabilitation centers. Based on the outcomes, the Ministry of Social Policy, Family, and Unity of Ukraine and the Ministry of Health will define a clear plan to address pressing issues.
Denis Ulyutin stressed that the prosthetic system should become part of a comprehensive rehabilitation pathway. Currently, the Ministry of Social Policy is focusing on three key tasks in this area:
Prosthetics as part of rehabilitation — with a clear pathway: from the moment of amputation to prosthetic selection, training in its use, support, and reintegration into a full life. This includes the role of communities in adaptation, support, and employment after prosthetic fitting.
Transparent pricing at every stage of assistance, enabling more efficient spending of funds and reaching a greater number of people undergoing prosthetics.
State support for the development of Ukrainian prosthetic manufacturers to ensure systemic provision of high-quality modern prosthetics.
