Thirteenth Safe Underground School Opens in Zaporizhzhia Region

Today, October 17, an underground school was officially opened based on the Komyshuvakha “Dzherelo” Gymnasium in the Zaporizhzhia district, with the participation of Minister of Social Policy, Family and Unity Denys Uliutin. This is already the thirteenth such safe underground school established in the Zaporizhzhia region.

“The UN Convention on the Rights of the Child guarantees the right to education for every child. Even in times of war, when Russia is destroying childhood, Ukraine — with the support of international partners — continues to uphold these guarantees for its children. Thanks to safe educational spaces, they can communicate, learn, and grow. This is the foundation of our future,” — emphasized Denys Uliutin.

More than 600 children study at the gymnasium, including first-graders, high school students, and children with special educational needs. All classes are held exclusively in protected areas — spacious, bright, and modern classrooms. The underground school building is fully inclusive: it is equipped with an elevator, accessible restrooms, and navigation signs in Braille.

Background: The construction of the gymnasium was carried out with the support of the European Union under the Framework Agreement between Ukraine and the EU on financing through the Ukraine Facility instrument.
