Gender Policy, Family Support and Demographic Resilience: Liudmyla Shemelynets Held Meetings on the Sidelines of the CSW

The 70th session of the United Nations Commission on the Status of Women (SCW) is still ongoing in New York, with the participation of a Ukrainian delegation. Liudmyla Shemelynets, First Deputy Minister of Social Policy, Family and Unity of Ukraine, has already held a series of high-level meetings and taken part in international discussions on women`s participation in decision-making, combating violence, and supporting families and children affected by the war.
During the roundtable discussion on expanding women`s participation across all decision-making systems through the implementation The CEDAW Committee’s General Recommendation No. 40, Liudmyla Shemelynets noticed that Ukraine considers gender equality to be one of the key priorities of its state policy in the field of human rights.
“Equal participation of women and men in all spheres of life is a foundation of economic resilience, strong state institutions and, eventually, peace. Even under conditions of the full-scale war, Ukraine continues to implement systemic policies in the field of gender equality. The combination of legislative changes, strategic communication and active cooperation with civil society and international partners is essential for achieving true results,” said Liudmyla Shemelynets.
Liudmyla Shemelynets also met with Karin Prien, Federal Minister for Education, Family Affairs, Senior Citizens, Women and Youth. The discussion focused on gender and demographic policies.
Particular attention was paid to the supporting Ukrainian children affected by the war. The sides also discussed the development of a mental health support system for both adults and children, as well as the operation of Resilience Centers in communities.
Moreover, the discussion covered active longevity and support for senior citizens. The German partners expressed their willingness to share their respective programmes.
“For Ukraine, it is extremely important to strengthen international cooperation in social policy – from mental health support to the development of active longevity policies. The exchange of experience and practical solutions helps us build a resilient support system”, emphasized Liudmyla Shemelynets.
As a reminder, the 70th session of the United Nations Commission on the Status of Women (SCW) is still ongoing in New York. It is one of the most important international platforms for the promotion of gender equality and the empowerment of women worldwide.
