Social and Psychological Rehabilitation of Children

As a result of the Russian military aggression as well as continuous life hazard, major stress and traumatic experiences faced by the military and civilians, namely the children living along the line of contact, more and more people are facing psychological problems. They can be sleeping and anxiety disorders, attention and memory issues, emotional burnout and other disorders. The war has especially deteriorated problems of domestic violence and gender inequality.

These difficulties have resulted in some families getting into difficult life circumstances when parents are unable to take due care of their children. Since the situation in the country remains tense, in 2016, the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine adopted the legislative amendments to enhance the protection of the child victims of the war. In particular, the new category of children was introduced: those affected by hostilities and armed conflicts, and the need of state protection and support of such children was established.

The international standards emphasised the importance of ensuring children’s rights and protecting their interests in any conditions, especially at war. Special attention is paid to mitigation of negative effects of the conflict for children.

In the context of the full-scale war, new programmes and methods need to be developed based on the traditional and innovational approaches in order to help children via psychological, medical, pedagogical and social rehabilitation.

The guidance resources have been created in order to support vulnerable categories of children, namely those affected by violence, trafficking in human beings or hostilities. They help social workers, psychologists, teachers and other specialists working with children to provide efficient and high-quality aid, assistance and rehabilitation.
